I first heard the name Lady Gaga through a mutual friend. He couldn't stop talking about her. It was half an hour before showtime, and Oprah Winfrey is a lake of calm amid the gusts of activity around her. At the same time everyone was discussing Jonathan Ive, Apple's lead designer, might - or might not - leave the company. Gaga's lyrics are incredibly literary. When "Bad Romance" starts, the music grabs your ear immediately. "What I'm afraid," says Oprah, "is that by 9:22 we're gonna be running out of stuff. I don't want it to be a B.S. session about B.S." There was someone claiming that Ive's wish to move back to the UK for the sake of his children's education was causing a rift with Apple. People forget how young GAGA is. She is barely 24 — much younger than I was when I became famous. It's very tough being where she is right now. People are pulling her in all different directions. The crowd begins to chime in, and Oprah responds enthusiastically. There's no doubt Ive has been a vital component in Apple's recent resurgence. As a member working for the entertainment industry, sometimes we have to balance powers between all these people. Coz they all seem to be in the headline...
